WORKPLACE CULTURE

BEST PRACTICE 1

Intentionally design, revamp, and implement policies that promote diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Example of how this Best Practice connects to the Guiding Principles:

Address Structural Racism: Employers should strive to reflect community diversity and enact practices that provide equitable opportunities and allow people to reach their full potential.

Address Trauma: Employers should customize services for individuals and communities.

Examples of how employers can implement this Best Practice:

  • Develop and deliver organization-wide diversity-focused training on implicit/unconscious bias.

  • Provide training related to the LGBTQ+ community (such as safe space training) as well as training for working with different languages, people with interpreters, and people with disabilities.

  • Regularly review and openly share data related to organizational diversity, broken down by job level, full-time/part-time, and other key categories.

  • Make space within organizational culture and schedules for conversations and initiatives related to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

  • Declare a commitment to diversity on job applications, website, etc.

  • Ensure written policies address diversity and inclusion.

  • Be aware of financial needs of employees and how employer culture can impact these.
